The Children’s Foundation
Could you tell us how long the The Children’s Foundation has been existing? Why did you commit to this foundation?
The Children’s Foundation was created fourteen years ago by my husband, the president Amadou Toumani TOURE, who was then the General, after months of transition spent at the head of Mali, in order to cope, among other things, with the distress of the children of Mali, because, as we all know it, they stand for the future of our Nation. Its actions deal with the improvement of the life standards of those children, throughout the intervention in the domains of their protection, education and insertion. Moreover, we also spent as much time in the promotion of social, economic and cultural actions.
The Children’s Foundation has been a public-interest organisation since August 6th 1993.
I've been the effective president of the Foundation since July 17th 2002, out of passion and belief, and I've always been part of the creation, as regards solidarity. Our will is to strive for the economic and social development of the Malian populations, throughout the struggle against poverty and exclusion, particularly for difficult social stratums: mothers, children, youth, the access to education and health of which we are trying to facilitate. What is boosting our entire team, what is making me proud, is our reducing famine, illiteracy, disease, and our promoting the culture of democracy, of peace, and of solidarity towards the most deprived persons.
Which means do you possess in order to fulfil the ambitious programs you've designed right from the start? How would you describe a strategy ? Could you give us some examples ?
You need an outstanding potential of human, material and financial means to fulfil such a project. Collaboration with the partners that are likely to bring their aid to the fulfilment of the objectives of the Foundation is compulsory. They are: the Government, international organizations, NGOs, associations, decentralized communities, Charity organizations dealing with childhood, in a nutshell, anyone with good will, whether it be material or moral, from the public or private area. Many of them already have helped us in a tremendous way, and I thank them for that. That is why, obviously, the Foundation makes everything possible to create an open and free partnership where everyone can help to build up a common work. Concretely, a work of sensitization, education and information is done, leading to the social mobilization we'd hoped for, and, in order to gather more efficiently the resources needed to finance its activities, the foundation is also collecting funds.
In a nutshell, we act permanently in favour of young people, along with women, for one cannot help youth without helping the mothers. Young Malians stand for more than 50% of the Malian people. They have to face many social, economic and cultural issues: unemployment, moral and cultural identity crisis, deviancy, delinquency. We are trying to help them in their daily matters, and are mobilizing them for activities of public-interest, of solidarity, and of protection of environment for their commitment guarantees the success of the organization. As far as women are concerned, we believe that if the evolution of a society is made in parallel to the evolution of women, then looking after them thus becomes compulsory. Once the upsetting of family structures taken into account, we need to help them in their development and organization - in particular women from the countryside - throughout the design and consolidation of an appropriate legislation, by diminishing theinequality, first among them, and then between them and men. Thanks to our intervention, in the five last years, women from the countryside benefited from 443 individual mills in order to grind cereals, 500 sewing machines, and about 20 watering places, in order to facilitate their domestic tasks and to allow a more numerous number of the little girls that were helping them to go to school.
Your actions in the most various domains have been successes. What are you most proud of?
Obviously, my biggest pride lies in the new and large headquarters of The Children’s Foundation in Bamako, that was inaugurated on August 8th 2007, and where all our actions are, for now on, born.
The construction of the Hospital for both Women and their children, named "the Luxemburg", which opened in may 1999, is also a success that means a lot to me. This centre is a social and medical complex of diagnosis, treatment, hospitalization, and surgery, which is currently widening to research and education. It was born thanks to the help of Luxemburg, and most precisely to the Foundation Raoul Follereau, which is a partner in this project.
I am evoking those great fulfilments that stand for a torch for our other actions that also all mean a lot to me: I am thinking of our interventions in favour of handicapped children, a better access to drinking water for everybody, the schooling of a higher number of children, in particular little girls whom had previously been kept apart of it.

Prospective studies, governance and sustainable development
Presidency Key Brief : the first bilingual review
Because there can't be any sustainable development without a prospective, political and economic thought, on a medium and long basis, without a democracy and a good governance of the states and of the companies, Presidency Key Brief links the whole of theses features in what we call global sustainable development.
